For facility managers in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, maintaining optimal heat rejection is a daily challenge. The efficiency of your system relies heavily on the condition of the media. But how do you know when it's time to order new cooling tower fill? Recognizing the early signs of failure can save you thousands in energy costs.
1. Heavy Calcium Scale Buildup
In hard water areas, calcium carbonate scale is the enemy. When PVC cooling tower fill becomes heavily scaled, the weight increases dramatically. This not only reduces air-water contact but can also cause the entire fill pack to collapse under its own weight, potentially damaging the tower structure.
2. Brittle or Crumbled Sheets
Over time, standard PVC can become brittle due to UV exposure or chemical attack. If the bottom edges of your Crossflow Film Fill or Counterflow packs are crumbling when touched, the heat transfer capability is compromised.
Solution: For high-temperature or aggressive water environments, consider upgrading to our high-durability PP fill media for longer service life.
3. Uneven Water Pattern
Look at the water falling through the tower. Are there dry spots? This indicates clogged flutes. Clogging often happens when debris enters the system.
4. Excessive Water Drift
If you notice water droplets spraying out of the fan stack, your drift eliminators may be damaged, or the fill packs are misaligned. While replacing the fill, it is cost-effective to also replace the Cooling tower water collector to ensure you aren't wasting treated water.
5. Rising Leaving Water Temperatures
If your fans are running at 100** speed but the water isn't cooling down to the design temperature, your Film fill cooling tower media has likely lost its thermal efficiency. Replacing the fill is often cheaper than running fans at maximum power continuously.
