Why fill (a.k.a. Cooling Tower Media) matters
Think of the fill as the “heart” of a cooling tower — it’s where water and air meet so heat can transfer and evaporate water efficiently. The right fill design can give you colder water, lower fan power for the same performance, and fewer headaches with fouling.
Types of cooling towers and how fill fits in
There are two main tower flow configurations you’ll see: crossflow and counterflow. Fill behaves differently in each. Crossflow towers usually use hanging sheet-style fills; many counterflow towers use packed blocks or corrugated modules. The overall principle is the same: more water surface area + longer contact time with air = better cooling.
Film fill vs Splash fill — quick, friendly comparison
Film Fill / Film Fill Cooling Tower spreads water into thin films on corrugated sheets — excellent heat transfer and compact. Splash fill breaks water into droplets with bars or splash matrices — more tolerant of dirty water. In short: film fill is more efficient in clean water systems; splash fill is often chosen where fouling or suspended solids are a concern.
Common materials you’ll encounter
- PVC (polyvinyl chloride) — very common for film fills (corrugated or cross-fluted). Lightweight, inexpensive, good cooling performance.
- PP (polypropylene) — higher chemical/temperature tolerance than PVC in some grades.
- Wood / timber — older splash fills; still used in some retrofit or low-cost towers.
- FRP composites — for drift eliminators or special components.
Purchasing checklist (what to ask your supplier)
- What fill type do you recommend for our water quality? (hardness, TDS, solids)
- Do you offer custom module sizes or standard blocks? (we often do both)
- Material specs — UV, chemical resistance, expected lifetime in our climate
- Delivery & packaging dimensions (very important for shipping to SE Asia ports)
- Installation support — drawings, clips, glue, and recommended spacing
Maintenance basics
Routine checks: visual inspection every month, cleaning or pressure rinse every 3–12 months depending on water, and complete replacement when warped, cracked, or heavily fouled. For film fills, watch for algae/biofilm buildup; for splash fills, check for broken slats and debris trapping.
Short note — other products we make
Besides fill, our factory also makes Air intake grille and Cooling tower water collector, so we can often supply matched components for a tidy installation.
Wrap-up
If you're new to buying tower media, start with your water quality and target cold-water temperature — everything else flows from there. If you want, send us your drawings and we’ll sketch a fill layout and packing recommendation.
